While out for a wander on the Black Isle on a cold afternoon, I spent some time watching a flock of Turnstones foraging along a rocky beach.
As their name suggests, these little birds turn over stones in search of insects, crustaceans and molluscs. Turnstones can typically be found along the UK coastline with no preference to rock, sand or mud beaches. Some individuals (usually non-breeding) reside year round.
