Paul Young BSc MSc MICFor CEnv
Paul is the Principal Ecologist and Director responsible for all aspects of management of HED Ltd.
He has a wide range of experience in managing and delivering projects for clients in the public and private sector. On a day-to-day basis he manages a small team of ecologists for the consultancy but enjoys the variety that comes with undertaking site surveys and ECoW roles himself.
Paul has provided full time ECoW on a wide range of construction projects (for SSE and ABB/BB Consortium), underground cable routes, windfarms and hydro-schemes.
He has a very practical understanding of the construction industry, particularly with regards to major utility projects, and is client focussed. As a chartered professional he aims to make sure the interests of his clients are protected whilst ensuring compliance with industry and environmental good practice.
He has strong communication and interpersonal skills and is able to work as part of a small team to deliver projects on time and in budget. He has good working relationships with the key agencies in the north including SEPA, SNH and FCS.
Imogen Young BSc ACIEEM
Imogen is an experienced ecologist who has been working in the environmental field for over 30 years. Her career prior to joining HED Ltd in 2008 included professional roles as a Countryside Ranger, Field Studies and Outdoor Instructor and Chartered Science teacher. In these posts she has acquired a high degree of professionalism.
She is a very effective communicator and has the ability to get along with everyone in the team. Her teaching and environmental interpretation background has proved invaluable in this aspect. Imogen was one of the keynote speakers at the ICW (Institute of Collaborative Working ) at the Crystal in London in July 2017.
Since joining HED Ltd in 2008, Imogen has been a key team member of the company. She has headed up projects and ensured they have been delivered on time and in budget.
Imogen is a very able ecologist and has developed a range of specialist skills including Electrofishing, protected species surveys and provision of ECoW services. She is also a Schedule 1 Bird License holder.
Imogen is client focussed and ensures compliance with legislative constraints and industry good practice on sites.
Steven Melvin BSc MRes
Steven is a senior ecologist working for HED Ltd, with experience in working closely with clients both from a public and a private background, and couples this with undertaking desk-top studies, review and report writing. He undertakes field surveys on a variety of subjects, primarily protected species and habitat mapping.
Steven has provided long-term Environmental Clerk of Works (ECoW) support on substation construction projects. His specialisms include terrestrial protected mammals and he has additional experience in Marine Mammal Observation
He has a good understanding of the construction industry, and has gained significant practical experience from site. Steven is able to provide support to the client throughout the project, ensuring compliance with environmental good practice.
He has good communication and interpersonal skills and is able to work within teams to ensure deliverance of projects on time and meeting industry good standards.
Steven also works closely with the workforce, giving Tool Box Talks and encouraging the sharing of wildlife sightings to enhance awareness of the ecological issues among operatives.
